What To Expect
If you’re craving quiet woods and the chance to see some real wildlife, Dow Woods is a solid choice. This place covers 338 acres of untouched riparian forest, split into two sections by Bastrop Bayou; a wide, winding ribbon of water that brings in all kinds of critters.
There are two main trails here, both short, both worth walking. The Bayou Loop Trail is about a mile and a half of packed gravel that hugs the upper edge of the bayou. It’s a good stretch if you’re looking to catch birds in the brush or maybe spot a deer cutting through the trees.
Then there’s the Tveten Trail, a nearly one-mile paved path, smooth and steady, good for just about anyone. Both trails offer plenty of shade and solid views, especially early in the morning when the place comes alive.
Stay on the marked trails — these woods are wild, and that’s part of the charm. Bring water, wear sunscreen, and pack bug spray.
It’s not the distance that makes it special; it’s the stillness, the woods, and the chance to slow down and notice what’s around you.
